Parents have to be very careful when dealing with minor symptoms such as rashes and fevers. Although those symptoms are often ignored or not taken seriously due to how common they are, this article might make you think twice. In some cases, these symptoms may be characteristic of Hand-Foot-and-Mouth Disease (HFMD).

Recently, a concerned mom shared the story of what happened to her son who contracted HFMD. She posted on Facebook to raise awareness about the disease. She wrote:

The netizen also posted photos that showed her son covered in rashes and blisters. See them below.

The day after her son played at a playhouse, the young boy started burning up. The concerned mother then checked her son’s temperature and was shocked to discover that it had gone up to 39 degrees Celsius. The following day, rashes appeared on his feet, hands, and mouth.

After seeing her son covered in rashes, the concerned mother immediately sought medical assistance. The doctor found that her son had contracted HFMD. The doctor advised that the child should be isolated from crowded places as he could spread the virus. The healing process will take 5-10 days.

The mother also shared the treatment that her son had to undergo.

As per Mayo Clinic, HFMD is a mild, contagious, viral infection commonly found in young children. It is caused by the coxsackievirus. The disease is reportedly common in children because they often put their hands in their mouths. The virus is also commonly found in childcare settings where frequent diaper changes and potty training take place.

According to WebMD, the virus spreads through direct contact with someone who has it, or from something that has been in contact with the virus such as contaminated tables, toys, doorknobs, etc.

This disease may cause following initial signs and symptoms: fever, sore throat, followed by painful blisters, red rashes, feeling unwell, loss of appetite, and irritability.

Rashes may initially appear on the palms and the soles of the feet. This may soon turn into blisters and spread throughout the legs, knees, elbows, and buttocks, similar to what happened to the concerned mom’s young son.

Contracting HFMD can be prevented in many ways. These include frequent washing of hands, disinfecting common areas, imparting reminders of good hygiene, and isolating contagious carriers.
