NAGBABAGANG LAVA UMAPAW NA PABABA NG MAYON VOLCANO AT INAASAHANG SASABOG NA SA DARATING NA MGA ARAW!

Mayon Volcano or Mount Mayon is an active stratovolcano in the province of Albay in Bicol Region. Renowned as the “perfect cone” because of its symmetric conical shape, Mount Mayon is popular among tourists. Its first recorded eruption was in 1616. The volcanic eruption in 1814 was the most destructive, as it caused the death of 1,200 people.

Now, an eruption of the Mayon volcano could happen in the coming days or weeks, as warned by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOCS). Glowing red lava has started flowing on the slopes of Mount Mayon on Monday night, January 15. Netizens who live near the volcano have shared their photos of the erupting volcano.

One of them is DOST employee Richard Esplana, who snapped the photo from Brgy. Tamaoyan in Legazpi City. Esplana, who lives within the 10-kilometer danger zone, advised his fellow Bicolanos to tune in to government advisories and follow the precautionary measures.

Meanwhile, wedding videographer Ronald Rebutica, meanwhile, took a time-lapse video of the eruption as seen from Barangay Rawis in Legaspi City. Rebutica uploaded it on Facebook and received much attention from netizens. Rebutica’s video has already garnered 3,364 shares and over 40,000 views.

The Institute’s head, Renato Solidum, spoke about the lava rolling down from Mayon. He said: “The pyroclastic flows, there were several, were not generated by an explosion from the crater with lava, molten rocks and steam, shooting up the volcano then rolling down. “These were generated by lava fragments breaking off from the lava flow in the upper slopes.”

Approximately 15,000 people who live within six to seven kilometers – considered as the danger zone – of the volcano have evacuated. As of Tuesday, January 16, a total of 5,318 families or 21,823 individuals have been affected in 25 barangays in the towns of Camalig, Guinobatan, Ligao City, Daraga, Tabaco City, and Malilipot in Albay and were staying in 18 evacuation centers, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

Residents were advised to be vigilant, and to refrain from entering the six kilometer-radius permanent danger zone (PDZ); and seven-kilometer extended danger zone on the southern flanks of the mountain due to the danger of rock falls, landslides, and sudden explosions or dome collapse that may generate hazardous volcanic flows.
