It’s highly likely that all of us view death-defying stunts as awesome spectacles more than terrifying situations. There’s something about watching a stuntman executing their risky acts that will have you all worked up with excitement. After all, it’s amazing to watch someone escape injury or even death with a smile on their face. However, it’s sad to think that not all of these performances are carried out successfully. Many thrill-seekers have reportedly failed in their stunts – leading many of them to a tragic end.

Recently, Sailendra Nath Roy, a 50-year-old Indian stuntman known for his incredible stunts using only his hair, died after a failed attempt to travel across a river with only his hair attached to the zip-wire. Over a 1,000 witnesses saw the incident as they watched him attempt to cross the Teesta River in Darjeeling. In a report from news site Mirror, Sailendra made it through halfway when something alarming came up: his ponytail got stuck. Upon realizing that his hair was jammed in the wire, the stuntman tried to continue the traverse with his hands.

He was dangling in the air for 30 minutes before he reportedly suffered cardiac arrest, which resulted to his death. According to some of the witnesses, they didn’t realize something was wrong due to the constant cheering until they saw him straining above. 

It was only after nearly 45 minutes have passed that the police was able to bring him down. Sailendra was rushed to the medical center but to no avail, as he was declared dead upon arrival. Balai Sutradhar, photographer who was commissioned to capture what was supposed to be the daredevil’s record-breaking achievement narrated what went down.

“He was desperately trying to move forward. He was trying to scream out some instruction, but no one could follow what he was saying. After struggling for 30 minutes he became still.” According to Sailendra’s friend, it was the wish of the stuntman’s wife for him to quit his risky acts. “His wife used to urge him to quit doing dangerous stunts. Mr Roy convinced her that crossing the Teesta River would be his last…”

Prior to this, the stuntman earned a Guinness world record after accomplishing the same act on Coronation Bridge. He crossed a 600ft line as he was hung 70ft above the water. He became famous after hauling a hefty 42-ton train with only his hair to a distance of 2.5 meters.
